Secure wifi network.
Many of us uses WiFi Network(WiFi) to connect internet with computer, laptop, tabs and to mobiles without help of any cables.
The big problem with wireless is any other persons can access internet by entering in to our wifi network. This is also known as piggybacking. It will slow down your internet access speed as others are using same internet. It also create security threat.
There are many scenarios where innocent internet users faces legal problems for illegal activity when in reality, their system hacked through the unsecured WiFi networks.
To secure WiFi network follow below steps:
How to Secure Wifi network
1. Go to router settings page
Type 192.168.1.1 into your web browser to reach your wireless router’s settings home page. It will prompt for user name and password, then enter correct credentials to log in to routers’s homepage. Please read router’s manual for default user name and password.
2. Create a unique password on your router
Next thing is to change your router’s default password. Use password that can be unique and easily remember with combination of letters and symbols.
Change your password by going to administration security settings on router’s setting page. If you do not change your default user name and password then bad guys can log in to your router’s settings. I think i need not to explain what bad guys can do with your router’s settings.
3. Change your Network’s SSID name
The SSID (or Wireless Network Name) of your Wireless Router is usually predefined as “default” or is set to the brand name of the router (e.g., tplink).
You can change ssid name by goingto basic wireless settings in your router’s settings page. Once this is set, you will always be sure that you are connecting to the correct Wireless network.
4. Enable Network Encryption
In order to prevent other computers in the area from using your internet connection, you need to encrypt your wireless signals.
There are several encryption methods available for wireless settings including WEP, WPA (WPA-Personal), and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access version 2). WEP is basic encryption with least secure but is compatible with a wide range of old devices like old hard disks. WPA2 is the most secure but is only compatible with hardware manufactured since 2006.
To enable encryption on your Wireless network, open the wireless security settings on your router’s configuration page. This will usually let you select which security method you wish to choose; if you have older devices then choose WEP, otherwise go with WPA2. Enter a key code to access the network.
5. Filter MAC addresses
Every wireless devices have unique mac address just like IP address. You can add the MAC addresses of all your devices to your wireless router’s settings. So that only specified devices can connect to your wifi network.
To enable MAC address filtering; Find all devices MAC addresses and then add them to the MAC address in router’s administrative settings.
6.Decrease Wireless Signal range:
You can reduce your wireless signal range by changing the mode of your router to 802.11g (instead of 802.11n or 802.11b) or use a different wireless channel.
Place routers inside a shoe box to restrict the direction of signals.
you can also Apply the Anti-WiFi Paint by coating in entire room to block signal of WiFi router.
7.Frequently update your router’s settings to latest firmware.
8.It is also a good idea to turn off the router completely when you are not using it for long time. You can save on electricity and also you can close the door for wireless piggy backers.
Hence, your wireless network will now be a lot more secure and intruders may have a tough time to intercept your WiFi signals.
Therefore, if you follow above steps you can easily secure WiFi network.
